Large Decorative Painted Coat of Arms, Fontainebleau - IB09618

A large decorative painted coat of arms, executed in polychrome and cut to shield form. The composition is surmounted by a castle-form crown bearing the letter “F”, above a central coat of arms featuring a black eagle on a pale gold ground, accompanied by a star and the letter “N” in the upper quadrant. The shield is further embellished with horizontal wavy bands and a striking lower register depicting a red mythological serpent-like creature reclining amidst stylized flames. The whole is framed by carved foliate and braided motifs tied with pale blue ribbons, adding depth and decorative richness. 

Executed in painted wood with finely detailed linework and vivid coloration, the plaque displays an attractive aged patina and craquelure consistent with age. The reverse bears the stencil inscription “FONTAINEBLEAU” possibly dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Provenance: Château de Jouancy.
