A charming French late 19th mother-of-pearl dance card or aide-mémoire, finely crafted with engraved and hand-painted decoration. The rectangular case is veneered in shimmering mother-of-pearl panels, the front intricately embellished with a central cartouche depicting a leaping greyhound set within an ornate Rococo-style frame. The scene is surrounded by delicately hand-painted floral motifs in shades of blue, red, and green, enhanced by finely engraved decorative borders.

The reverse displays the natural iridescence of the mother-of-pearl, highlighting the beauty of the material. Opening the case reveals a vivid red silk-lined interior fitted with a notepad compartment and retaining loops, accompanied by a small bone pencil, reflecting its original function as a lady’s dance card, calling card case, or pocket memorandum book.

A refined example of Victorian craftsmanship, combining decorative artistry with practical elegance, and illustrating the period’s fascination with luxurious natural materials and finely detailed handwork.. France. 19th century.
