The central difference is how the silver became attached. Electroplate uses electrical deposition to build a coating on a finished base-metal object. Old Sheffield Plate uses silver sheet fused to copper before the combined material is shaped.

Old Sheffield Plate generally belongs to an earlier period and may attract greater specialist interest, but age alone does not guarantee quality or value. Marks provide a useful starting point. EPNS means electroplated nickel silver, while EPBM usually means electroplated Britannia metal. Neither abbreviation means that an object is solid silver.

Look beyond the stamp. Examine edges, seams, feet, handles, raised decoration, and other areas that receive frequent contact. Exposed red copper may suggest Old Sheffield Plate, but copper was also used beneath electroplate. Grey or yellowish wear may point towards nickel silver or brass.

Reliable identification combines several forms of evidence:

  • maker and material marks;
  • construction methods and seams;
  • the colour and location of wear;
  • design and manufacturing style;
  • documented provenance where available.
